Investors’ Wealth sheds N426bn as Relentless Profit-Taking Stretches Bear Run

The Nigerian Equity Market on Wednesday dipped by 1.96%, as the bear showed no sign of loosening its stronghold on investors’ sentiment. The decline was impacted by losses in four major sectors; save for the Oil & Gas sector that remains unchanged. Furthermore, the market breadth closed negatively, recording 37 losers and 13 gainers.

In summary, the All-Share Index (ASI) dropped by 814.15 absolute points, representing a drop of 1.96% to close at 40.696.01 points. While the overall Market Capitalization value lost N425.92 billion, representing a decrease of 1.96% to close at N21.29 trillion.  

NIGERINS emerged as top gainers (by percentage points) for today, with the maximum price appreciation of +10.00%, while  SOVRENINS, REGALINS, CAP, ETRANZACT, FIDSON and SUNUASSUR emerged as joint losers with a price depreciation of -10.00%.

Today’s market loss was driven by price depreciation in large and medium capitalized stocks amongst which are; MBENEFIT(-9.76%),  ETI(-8.06%), DANGCEM(-7.39%), UBA(-6.90%), AIICO(-6.72%), PRESCO(-5.93%), FLOURMILLS(-5.65%), TRANSCORP(-5.00%), ACCESS(-4.71%), ZENITH(-3.10%), WAPCO(-2.62%), DANGSUGAR(-2.30%), FBNH(-2.04%), GUARANTY(-1.53%) and JAPAULGOLD(-1.39%).

The Naira at the official rate remain unchanged to close at N379.00/$1 as against Thursday position.

The Investors and Exporters (I&E) FX window opened at N401.04 traded high at N422.59 and eventually closed at N400.00, representing 0.25% appreciation against yesterday’s position. A total of $49.07 million was transacted through the I&E window today.

MONEY MARKET

Overnight(O/N) rate closed at 5.25%, representing a 40.34% depreciation against yesterday’s position, while Open Buy-Back (OBB) rate closed at 5.00%,  representing a 41.18% depreciation as against yesterday’s position.
