Fall in Naira Extends Equity Market Woes, Dips by 0.79%

The Nigerian domestic market ended today (Thursday) trading activities on a bearish note,  thereby extending the losing streak to three consecutive trading session, as NGX-ASI contracted by 0.79%. The negative performance was buoyed by investors’ sell-off sentiment in all the major market sectors, excluding the Insurance sector that increased by 3.24% today, as we patiently await the release of more Half Year results of listed companies. Consequently, the market breadth closed negatively, recording 22 losers as against 17 gainers.

In summary, the All-Share Index (ASI) dropped by 306.21 absolute points, representing a decline of 0.79%, to close at 38,484.82 points. Similarly, the overall Market Capitalization value dipped by N159.54 billion, representing a decrease of 0.79% to close at N20.05 trillion.

TRIPPLEG emerged as the top gainer (by percentage points) for today, with a maximum price appreciation of +10.00%, while OANDO emerged as the top loser (by percentage points) with a maximum price depreciation of -9.70%.

Today’s market negative performance was driven by price depreciation in large and medium capitalized stocks amongst which are; UACN (-8.93%), FTNCOCOA (-7.55%), BUACEMENT (-5.21%), HONYFLOUR (-4.76%), LIVESTOCK (-3.75%), UBN (-3.70%),  NASCON (-3.67%), FLOURMILL (-2.44%), GTCO (-1.69%), DANGSUGAR (-1.62%), ACCESS (-1.61%), UCAP (-1.45%), UBA (-1.30%), VITAFOAM (-1.27%), UNILEVER (-1.06%), FCMB(-0.99%), and FBNH (-0.67%).
