Equity Market Sustains Negative Sentiment as NGX-ASI Dips by 0.12%

Transaction on the Nigerian domestic market closed for today (Monday) on a negative note, to extend the bearish sentiment to two consecutive trading session, as NGX-ASI declined further by 0.12%. The negative performance was buoyed by investors sell-off sentiment in all the major market sectors excluding the Insurance sector that grew by 0.37%. However, the market breadth closed positively, recording 21 gainers as against 11 losers.

In summary, the All-Share Index (ASI) declined by 48.39 absolute points, representing a decrease of 0.12%, to close at 39,434.69 points. Similarly, the overall Market Capitalization value lost 25.21 billion, representing a drop of 0.12% to close at N20.55 trillion.

FTNCOCOA emerged as the top gainer (by percentage points) for today, with a maximum price appreciation of +10.00%, while WAPCO emerged as the top loser (by percentage points) with a maximum price depreciation of -5.29%.

Today’s market negative performance was driven by price depreciation in large and medium capitalized stocks which are; PZ (-4.17%), UBN (-3.81%), ETERNA (-2.36%), FCMB (-2.27%), INTBREW (-2.08%), JAPAULGOLD (-1.85%), TRANSCORP (-1.03%), GTCO (-0.71%), OANDO (-0.41%), and  FLOURMILL (-0.34%)

FOREIGN EXCHANGE 23082021The I&E FX window traded high and low at N412.00 and N400.00 respectively on (23/08/2021) and eventually closed at N411.83, depreciating against Friday’s position. Also, at the BDC, the naira closed at N517, unchanged against Friday’s position.

Nigeria’s foreign reserve declined further by $18.39 million to $33.50 billion on (20/08/2021) from $33.52 billion on (19/08/2021).

CRUDE OIL 230802021

The Brent crude and WTI crude appreciated by $3.57 and $3.50 to $68.75 and $65.64 on (23/08/2021) from $62.14 and $65.18 on (20/08/2021), representing rise of 5.48% and 5.63% respectively. Also, the Bonny Light appreciated by $2.54 to $67.25 on (23/08/2021) from $64.71 (20/08/2021), representing a 3.93% increase in price.
