Coronavirus entry deepens Nigeria market woes as market cap tanked 308.29 billion naira

The Nigerian equity market on Friday closed lower, extending losing streak to six consecutive trading days,  following the report of the first case of Coronavirus in Nigeria. Consequently, the market breadth closed negative, recording 2 gainers against 41 losers.

NSE Trading Floor

In summary, the All-Share Index (ASI) decreased by 591.78 absolute points, representing a dip of 2.21% to close at 26,216.46 points. Similarly, the overall Market Capitalization size shed N308.29 billion, representing a dip of 2.21% to close at N13.66 trillion.

VITAFOAM emerged as the top gainer while NB, ETI, OANDO, CADBURY, PZ & NEM emerged as top losers.

The downtrend was impacted by losses recorded in large and medium capitalized stocks, amongst which are; NB (-10.00%), ETI (-10.00%), CADBURY (-10.00%), GUARANTY (-9.85%), UACN (-8.64%), FBNH (-7.84%), ACCESS (-6.29%), UBA (-4.29%), ZENITHBANK (-2.63%) and MTNN (-1.87%).

FOREIGN EXCHANGE

The Naira at the official window on Friday closed unchanged at 306.95/$1, against yesterday’s position.

The Investors and Exporters (I&E) FX window opened at N365.75, traded high at N366.60 and eventually closed at N365.25, representing a 0.01% depreciation against yesterday’s closing position. A total of $848.01 million was transacted through the I&E window today.

 

MONEY MARKET

Overnight(O/N) rate closed at 16.45%, representing a 13.92% appreciation against yesterday’s closing position, while Open Buy-Back (OBB) rate closed at 15.50%, representing 13.50% appreciation against yesterday’s position.

NASD OTC MARKET

The NASD OTC market on Friday closed unchanged as the Unlisted Securities Index (USI) closed at 700.39, against yesterday’s closing position. Similarly, Market Capitalization closed at N503.55 billion, unchanged against yesterday’s position. However, the aggregate volume and value decreased by 100.00% and 99.95% respectively, as investors traded a total of 200,056 volume of shares, valued at N2.40 million in 3 deals.
